FAQ – Start of the Semester
What is Teknologkåren?
Teknologkåren is the student union for all students at LTH (Faculty of Engineering, Lund University). We monitor the university and the quality of education to ensure everyone’s safety and academic standards. In addition, we organize parties, balls, pubs, leisure activities, dance courses, and career events to make your time here more enjoyable! We're here for you throughout your studies.
At Teknologkåren, we are divided into guilds (“sektioner”) that roughly correspond to the different programs. Each guild monitors its own program and organizes its own social activities. As a member, you'll learn all the songs, chants, colors, and traditions of your guild.
Teknologkåren vid LTH (also known as Teknologkåren, The Union, or TLTH) is the central organization for students at LTH. Our work is divided into three pillars — Education, Career, and Leisure.
For your education, we have study councils that oversee the learning environment and the quality of teaching. We also represent students towards LTH to continuously improve student conditions.
To connect you with employers, we organize ARKAD every November — Scandinavia’s largest career fair. We also host lunch lectures and various company events.
We also host pubs, balls, dance classes, sports, and more. Teknologkåren plays a coordinating role in the introduction period.
What is the introduction period?
The introduction period, called “Nollningen” in Swedish, starts on your very first day and continues with activities for several weeks. It’s a fantastic way to meet your new classmates and get to know student life in Lund! It’s mainly organized by the guilds, which you can read more about at tlth.se/sektioner. You can also read more on your guild’s own website. You don’t need to sign up to participate in the introduction period.
The introduction period is a wonderful time when you get to experience student life in Lund and at LTH. Over several weeks, you’ll get to explore your new city, get a feel for your studies, and make lifelong friends!
All events during the introduction period are completely voluntary.
To participate in most of the events, you need to be a member of Teknologkåren.
Which memberships do I need?
Membership in Teknologkåren
To join many of the events organized by Teknologkåren and the guild during the introduction period and throughout your studies you need to be a member of Teknologkåren. Your membership card is a digital Mecenat card, shown in the Mecenat app. The card is created once the university has processed your course registration, which may take about a week. You’ll get an email from Mecenat once your card is available in the app. Through Mecenat, you also get access to local and national student discounts.

Membership in Studentlund
To access the student nations and “Akademiska föreningen”, you also need to be a member of Studentlund. You must also be a Studentlund member to join AF Bostäder’s housing queue. Studentlund also has a digital membership card, which is available in the “Stuk.co” app. Learn more and sign up at at www.studentlund.se/medlemskap.
Being a Student in Lund
What’s it like to be a student in Lund?
Student life in Lund is rich, diverse, and dates back to the 1600s! Once the semester starts, you’ll become part of a community of about 40,000 students — around 9,000 of whom are engineering, industrial design, and architecture students.
Housing
Start looking for housing as soon as possible. Lund has many students, so housing demand is high. There are many organizations and associations that offer student housing in a variety of forms: AF Bostäder, Michael Hansen’s College, Bopoolen.nu, and the student nations. Lund is also within commuting distance of other towns in Skåne.
Getting Around
Lund is known as a bike-friendly city — getting a bike is highly recommended! Most parts of student life are within walking or cycling distance. When it rains, you can use buses, trams, and trains with the Skånetrafiken app to travel around the region.
Skånetrafiken
To get a student discount on Skånetrafiken, your membership card must show the student discount symbol. This requires that you are course-registered.
Nations
There are 13 student nations at Lund University. The oldest ones were founded just a few years after the university was established in 1666. The nations focus mainly on the social life outside of studies. They offer housing and organize many social events such as clubs, lunches, balls, and sports teams. To be a member of most nations, you must join Studentlund: www.studentlund.se
Student Associations
There are tons of student associations in Lund. Some are coordinated through Akademiska föreningen (AF), others are independent. There are choirs, film clubs, sports groups, student theater, wine societies, and much more.
How can I prepare for the start of the semester?
Books
For many courses, you’ll need to get your own textbooks. Many of them can be found at KFS (kfsab.se) located in Studiecentrum. KFS is owned by Teknologkåren and offers both new and used books, stationery, and calendars. There are also other bookstores in Lund and online for both new and used books. A great tip is to check your guild’s Facebook groups where older students often sell their books.
Schedule
Schedules are available on TimeEdit. You can search by program, year, course, or room. Check it out now at: https://cloud.timeedit.net/lu/web/lth1/ According to the schedule, classes start on the hour, but in Lund, we follow the “academic quarter,” meaning classes start 15 minutes later than scheduled. If you ever see the notation “(..)”, this means the session starts exactly at the scheduled time — without the academic quarter.
